Viewing of ATHICA’s current exhibit, Taking Part is available before and after the event during regular Sunday gallery hours of 1:00 -6:00 p.m.

Dealmobs.com will bring the mob to ATHICA on Sunday, January 30th starting at 3:00 p.m., with a delightful event reminiscent of FlashMob events, designed to compliment Taking Part, ATHICA’s winter exhibit of participatory art projects.

Mirror Mob is a group photo event during which people will participate in the creation of a unique group photo in which participants will be reflected in each other’s mirrors, captured by the expert eye of experienced event photographer Blane Marable. Mr. Marable—a professional photographer recently voted “Athens Best Photographer” by the Athens Banner-Herald—captures events as staff photographer for the University of Georgia.

In a generous gesture, dealmobs, who is also an exhibit sponsor, will donate all proceeds from the sale of the subsequent photograph to benefit ATHICA, a non-profit cultural institution that has been bringing Athens’ stimulating exhibitions since 2002—Taking Part is its 38th exhibit.

The resulting photograph will be sold from www.dealmobs.com, a local online daily-deal company.
The Mirror Mob event is the brainchild of Ms Shockley, dealmobs V.P. of Sales & Marketing, who pitched it to ATHICA Director Lizzie Z. Saltz after hearing about the Taking Part exhibit. Shockley is a former art student and photojournalist with studies at the New England School of Photography in Boston, MA and at UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art under her belt. Mr. Marable, who was invited by Shockley, is also generously donating his services.

The Mirror Mob event is ATHICA’s first joint art project with a corporate entity, adding an interesting layer to the innovative art-making approaches the Taking Part exhibit will be bringing to Athens’ viewers attention.
Says Shockley “We were intrigued by the idea of the show; it seemed so apt as our world becomes more and more about sharing our experiences with the invention of social media. We were an obvious partner in this arena, as dealmobs.com is a local website that brings a mob of users to local businesses with one great daily deal.”

Shockley would like interested potential participants to know that all members of the public are invites. And although the ideal mirror is a hand mirror, all mirrors, from large compacts to medium-sized decorative mirrors are welcome, as the more variation in the mirrors, the more interesting the photograph will be. Everyone should feel free to come be a part of the mirror mob even if they don’t have a mirror, as some people will just be reflected and not reflecting.

This event is affiliated with Taking Part, an exhibit of participatory art by six artists, which will run though Sunday, March 6th, 2011. While all of the artists incorporate input from the public, some request input from their non-artist collaborators before the work is finalized, while others incorporate participation during the exhibition. ATHICA will host a number of affiliated events during the exhibit run, enhancing discussion of this contemporary art-making methodology.
